These two low cupboards are the work of Etienne Levasseur (1721-1798), a cabinetmaker who specialized in restoring furniture by André-Charles Boulle (1642-1732) and also made pastiches of such pieces. In the case of the two cupboards of the Grog collection, it is possible that he used marquetry panels dating from the 17th century. Levasseur worked mainly for the marchands-merciers (dealers), supplying them with Boulle marquetry furniture and thus continuing his predecessor's work

Cabinet with Mechanism

The royal cabinetmaker Jean-François Oeben designed several pieces of furniture with mechanisms, including an armchair, to make life easier for the disabled young duke of Burgundy, Louis XV's eldest grandson (hence the origin of the generic term "Burgundy-style furniture"). Noted for the beauty of his forms, Oeben has invented a table with a particularly ingenious mechanism, veneered with a geometric design influenced by classical Greek motifs.


A remarkable mechanism

Oeben's description of the table as "Burgundy-style" recalls the disability of the young duke of Burgundy, eldest grandson of Louis XV (1751-60), for whom the cabinetmaker had already produced a mechanized invalid chair. When closed, this "table" looks like a chest of five drawers. However, the operation of a crank causes a hidden bookcase to rise out of the top.The curved ends of the bookcase contain folding circular shelves lined with blue moiré, supporting two round boxes covered in the same fabric. The two top drawers in fact form a drop front that can be lowered into a small writing table. The bottom drawer converts into a prie-dieu (prayer-stool) and the drawer just above it can be used as a bedside table. This drawer may also be taken out completely and placed on folding feet. The Burgundy-style table can thus act as a bookcase, prie-dieu, writing-desk and bedside table.

In 1772, the marchand-mercier (dealer) Poirier had a commode adorned with Sèvres porcelaine plaques delivered to Louveciennes for Madame du Barry (1743-1793). The plaques reproduced paintings that are earlier than the commode. This piece, now in the Musée du Louvre, is attributed to the cabinetmaker Martin Carlin (circa 1730-1785) who was the creator of several porcelain-decorated pieces of furniture. It is a work representative of the royal favorite's taste for this kind of luxury furniture.

Drop-front secrétaire

This secrétaire or writing desk has a drop front and a drawer in the apron and is the work of the cabinetmaker Martin Carlin (circa 1730-85). Assembled from elements drawn from a variety of sources, it must have been made for one of the great furniture dealers, perhaps Daguerre. The front is decorated with six marble and hardstone mosaic panels, apparently taken from older furniture; the great variety of materials employed makes for a lively polychrome effect.

Commode and two corner cupboards

This set of two corner cupboards and a commode was made by Joseph Baumhauer (died 1772). Baumhauer was one of the king's appointed cabinet-makers. Most of his work was sold through marchands merciers, dealers specialising in luxury goods and furniture. The clean lines and Greco-Roman ornaments of these three pieces are typical of the Greek style in vogue in the 1760s.

Marc Antoine Thierry de Ville d'Avray was appointed Intendant Général du Garde-Meuble in May 1784. In July of the same year, he commissioned this rolltop desk for his private use from the cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener. Although the design had been perfected by Jean-François Oeben some twenty years earlier, the desk is a fine example not only of Riesener's expertise but also of the vogue for certain types of furniture which lasted until the end of the Ancien Régime.

In 1781, Madame Adélaïde had a commode and two corner cupboards delivered for her Grand Cabinet at the château de Bellevue. Several years later, Madame Victoire also wanted a set of japanned furniture for her Grand Cabinet, including a commode, a pair of corner cupboards, a console, a chiffonnier and a desk. Made by Martin Carlin, all of these works, except the console, are in the Louvre
