Jean-Claude Duplessis pot-pourri vase (decorated by Charles-Nicolas Dodin)

Jean-Claude Duplessis pot-pourri vase (decorated by Charles-Nicolas Dodin)
Soft-paste porcelain, polychrome enamel decoration, gilding
French, Sèvres
1756-57
This vase was owned by Madame de Pompadour who kept it in her apartment in Versailles.
This lidded potpourri vase is one of the most famous models introduced by the Sèvres porcelain manufactory; such discerning patrons as Madame de Pompadour and her brother the marquis de Marigny collected the form. Among the largest vessels produced by the factory, these vases were extremely difficult to fire; they tended to collapse in the kiln. Consequently, only about twelve were ever produced, ten of which survive today.

Partial coffee service ("Déjeuner Culture et Récolte du Cacao"), 1836
All of the scenes painted on this coffee service reflect activities connected with the cultivation of cocoa and the preparation of hot chocolate. The scenes are set in Mexico, and each composition includes specific references to some aspect of the growing, harvesting, and sale of cocoa beans, or the steps involved in transforming the beans into hot chocolate. The scenes provide a wealth of detail about these various activities, and the depiction of the preparatory steps as well as the utensils employed reflects a surprising degree of historical accuracy.
