mother-of-pearl snuffbox- Daniel Baudesson
Origin: Berlin c.1765 Materials: mother-of-pearl, gold, diamonds, rubies, hardstones, foil
The Gilbert Collection contains over 200 gold boxes, most of which were made as containers for snuff, a form of powdered and scented tobacco became a craze throughout 18th-century Europe. As snuff-taking* developed into an elaborate social ritual it gave rise to an entirely new art form of superbly made and very expensive boxes that reflected the luxurious tastes of the aristocracy. Gold snuff boxes were also used as important diplomatic gifts and were often presented as rewards by grateful monarchs.

chrysoprase snuffbox-Jean Guillaume George Kruger
Origin: Berlin
Date: c. 1755
Materials: Chrysoprase, diamonds, hardstones, foil, gold
Chrysoprase was a particular favourite of Frederick II, the Great of Prussia. It used to be mined in Silesia, then a part of Prussia, but fell out of favour once the Silesian deposits were exhausted. Today, most of the world’s supply of chrysoprase comes from Australia.
It is recorded that Frederick owned eight chrysoprase snuffboxes and that this one was presented by Frederick to his brother Augustus Wilhelm. The design is probably by Jean Guillaume George Kruger Kruger, a London-trained designer who moved to Berlin in 1753 and designed a series of snuffboxes in the Prussian royal collection. This particular box dates from around 1755.

Snuffbox, ca. 1815
Maker: Gabriel-Raoul Morel (French, active 1798–ca. 1827); School of Jean-Baptiste Isabey (French, 1767–1855) and possibly Madame Aimée-Zoë Lizinka de Mirbel (French, 1796–1849)
Gold, ivory
Made by Gabriel-Raoul Morel in about 1815, this snuffbox of matte and polished gold with scrolling acanthus design contains a removable medallion with a framed portrait miniature of Marie Louise (1791–1847) by Isabey. The portrait forms a cover to a secret compartment containing two other miniatures, one of Napoleon I (1769–1821), possibly by Mirbel, and the other of the King of Rome (François-Joseph-Charles, duke of Reichstadt, 1811–1832) by Isabey

Snuffbox
Entirely made of gold, decorated with enamel and diamonds, this snuffbox is the oldest in the Louvre, and one of the rare diplomatic snuffboxes that has been preserved. Inside the lid are two miniatures depicting Louis XV and Maria Leczinska. In 1726, Louis XV gave this work by the goldsmith Daniel Govaers to Baron Cornelis Hop, ambassador of Holland (1685-1762).
Casket for Louis XVIII's snuffbox
Casket for Louis XVIII's snuffbox
Louis XVIII's snuffbox casket is the finest work made by the Manufacture de Sèvres during the Restoration. The casket designed for the king's snuffbox also contained painted miniatures to be fitted successively into the lid of the snuffbox. The work required the contribution of several artists under the supervision of Alexandre Brongniart (1770-1847), then head of the Manufacture de Sèvres.
